Log Frame & Timber Frame Homes For Your Future

Designed for Extraordinary Individuals

A Modern Twist on an Ancient Building Method...

Southern Log Crafters has been helping to design and construct log and timber homes for over twelve years.  Working with many of the log and timber frame home industry leaders as well as general contractors to improve their building processes and techniques.  "Understanding how a home works is half the battle.  I examine the plans, introduce ideas for both design and practicality to both the customer and the design team and we make the home work properly."  says Cecil Stubbs, founder and owner of Southern Log Crafters.  "We're not like some of those companies that we have built homes for in the past, we don't drop the materials package off with a 'good luck' never to be heard from again.  That's because we don't just provide a materials package but a full service install on ninety percent of what we provide to the customer.  The one thing that we had to ensure while making this leap into providing the Traditional Log Frame™, Log Frame and Timber Frame materials packages was that the quality of construction could also be controlled by us.  This ensures that the customer gets what they pay for in the both the quality of materials and the quality of craftsmanship.  My promise to our customers is that you will see me there, both on site and involved in the cutting and trial fitting processes of your new home."

The Traditional Log Frame™ and Log Frame Home Idea

Throughout his time in the log and timber home industry he has noticed two major concerns with potential log customers –

(1) Settlement, although many providers have taken steps to drastically reduce this issue it still remains a major concern for potential customers in the form of ‘compaction’, and continues to have the creaking, cracking and, movement normally associated with the settlement of wall logs.

(2) Upkeep, again, the preservative products of today far exceed those of yester-year, but many customers only want to do it once in their lifetime, when their home is constructed.  They do not wish to inspect or hire someone to inspect the exterior wall logs for checks, cracks, or damage resulting from exposure to the elements.

Both of these concerns have deterred many potential customers from the purchase of their dream log and timber home package and ultimately most in this scenario settle for a custom stick-built home that was not, and is not, what they initially envisioned.

In late '07 Cecil had a vision of a post and beam style log home that he thought would be a great alternative to both log and timber frame construction.  He decided to talk with one of the leaders in the handcrafted timber frame construction industry about his vision.  Nestled in the heart of the Western North Carolina mountains, Goshen Timber Frames has been an industry leader in post and beam construction for over ten years.  Bonnie and David Pickartz, owners of Goshen Timber Frames, listened to what Cecil had to say, offered some great suggestions, and after almost a year of consideration from both parties, decided to partner with Southern Log Crafters to provide our customers with more variety for building their Dream Home.  "Post and beam construction is one of the oldest methods of building and has been around prior to the early Greek civilizations" says Bonnie Pickartz.

"Just the idea of bringing these two methods of construction together creates so many different design and aesthetic options for the customer, it's remarkable.  And in essence, if they can dream it, we can design it and build it." Cecil Stubbs
